To get the full picture let’s rewind time a little and take a trip down the history books.
We begin with Victoria Island originally belonging to the Oniru royal family, the lagos development board had acquired Victoria Island in 1948 and relocated the inhabitants to a nearby area called Maroko.
After independence this island blossomed into a commercial and business hub and in the 1980s the leki-epe expressway was built connecting Victoria Island to Epe of course with roads came development and the nearby Maroko settlement became a hub for people who wanted to live close to the developing city that victoria island had become.
However there was a problem, Maroko was in essence a wetland, a slum the living conditions were unpleasant, and compared to the nearby Victoria Island, maroko was an eyesore the nearby residents had had enough, and the complaint was made to the military governor of the state Raji Rasaki.
According to the government, the land was 1.5 meters above sea level and was therefore liable to flooding and complete submergence, and Maroko’s total environment was unkept and dangerous and presented a risk of disease epidemics.
As far as the government was concerned therefore Maroko was cleared in the overriding public interest and to give room for good planning so as to make life more pleasant safe and convenient for those evicted.
In the first week of July 1990, the residents of Maroko woke up to a radio broadcast by the government they were being evicted to be demolished and they were given eight days to pack up and leave.
These were people who had families who had built houses and businesses and all of that was to be destroyed.
They tried to appeal to the courts but seven days later before the eight-day notice had even expired the military stormed Maroko with bulldozers and tore the town down in what has become known as one of the biggest acts of government-sanctioned displacement in Nigeria.
Over 300 000 people were forcefully evicted from Maroko that day, the soldiers showed no mercy, residents were brutalized several people lost their lives and there are reports that the women were even raped but hold on you might be thinking was this forceful eviction aimed at urban renewal or was this a government-backed land-grabbing exercise.
Let’s examine some more details in 1989 former military ruler General Babangida visited Maroko and promised to bless them with development.
Former premier of the western region Obafemi Awolowo also had a role to play in this the Dide-Olu estates in Oniru which belong to the Awolo family is cited in a portion of what used to be Maroko Ligali Ayorinde the former chief judge of Lagos state at the time is also alleged to have played a role in subverting justice he had refused to listen to a plea by the Maroko residence for an extension of the eviction deadline and then after Maroko had been ruined he told them that the subject’s matter had already been destroyed and that they the evictees had no case. today Ligali Ayorinde Street is named after him he’s also a landowner in the area that was once Maroko
The Oniru and Elegushi royal families of Lagos state are also alleged to be beneficiaries of the forceful eviction.
In the 90s Nigeria was still swimming in oil revenue many millionaires and billionaires were coming into money so they needed to live in or around the highbrow area of Victoria Island victoria Island had to be expanded to accommodate these wealthy people even if it meant displacing over hundred thousand others.
It was a case of the rich versus the poor and the rich won.
The displaced residents were relocated to parts of Ilasan and Ikota where they still live to this day in dilapidated houses and deplorable conditions.
Many of them never received any settlement from the government they are still fighting for some form of compensation even to this day what was once known as maroko has been transformed into the areas comprising Oniru and Lekki.
The slums are gone and have been replaced by beautiful structures and shiny new buildings what was once a slum is now the hub of lifestyle and recreation for the new rich.
But the next time you visit Lekki spare a thought for those who lost their homes and livelihoods in Maroko.

Lekki is an upscale neighborhood in Lagos’s southeastern section. It is situated beneath the Lagos Lagoon and above the Atlantic Ocean. Lekki, today one of the most expensive areas to live in, was previously a slum called Maroko.
